Angelo LeRoi
Angelo LeRoi is a Chicago-based singer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Hailing from Los Angeles, he grew up infatuated with Prince, The White Stripes, and Jimi Hendrix, which inspired him to pick up the guitar when he was just seven years old. Though his early passion for alternative music meant he originally envisioned himself as part of a band, his discovery of artists like Tyler, The Creator, Frank Ocean, and Kendrick Lamar during the 2010s soon motivated him to embark on a solo career. Equipped with the mindset of a one-man-band and a DIY-centric ethos, he taught himself to play bass, keys, drums, and honed his singing chops – opting to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he graduated with a degree in contemporary writing and production. He eventually connected with North Carolina poet laureate MAVI for two tracks, “Opportunity Kids” (1.2M Streams) and “Hemlock” (6M+ Streams), off the rapper’s 2022 album Laughing so Hard, it Hurts, a collaboration that would go on to blossom into a full-blown creative partnership.
LeRoi played an integral role in both MAVI and close affiliate MESSIAH!’s transitions from making sample-driven music to creating songs they could envision one day being sampled by other people. In 2024, he served as one of the lead writers and producers on both MAVI’s critically-acclaimed album shadowbox, crafting the instrumental for poignant lead single “drunk prayer” (4M+ Streams) from scratch, and the villain wins!, the stirring debut mixtape from MESSIAH!, in addition to his production work on Michigan R&B crooner Malaya’s project CONCESSION. Kicking off 2025, LeRoi produced Salimata’s “9-5”, “Small Talk” (feat. Samara Cyn), the lead single to Ovrkast.’s album WHILE THE IRON IS HOT, on which he also produced the intro track, and more.
With his latest EP eLRoi out now, a self-produced, written, and recorded project, Angelo LeRoi made his grand reintroduction as a solo artist. Heeding influence from the rich cultural history of Black American Blues music as well as artists like Smokey Robinson, Curtis Mayfield, and even Picasso — the latter of whom inspired the project’s cover art — eLRoi is a warm, unfailingly personal collection of love songs rooted in reverence for the beauty found in everyday life.
